I've been watching their HBO show since it started (erm... entirely legally, of course) and it really is absurdly funny, in an understated sort of way. It's very British, but with more accents.
Having said that, I do think some of their songs were better in their standup days - if you can find The Humans are Dead on youtube it is well, well worth a listen. And if I knew anything about David Bowie, I'm sure I'd find the Bowie Song hilarious.
Also, Bret (the little one) played Figwit in Lord of the Rings. That's possibly one of my favourite facts ever.
