Sign in greengrocers:

"An aubergine, or 'eggplant' actually has nothing to do with an egg! It is called that simply because it is egg-shaped."

Who THE BLINKING FLIP thinks eggplants are literally a kind of egg?

*worries for the future*

UPDATE: yes it was that greengrocers. I did go back with my camera, but didn't take a photo in the end, I felt bad.

Um, who THE BLINKING FLIP thinks eggplants are actually egg-shaped?

Erm...at the risk of sounding like a smartarse, I think the "egg-plant" name owes its existnce to the variety of this plant shown at the link below.

Can't do proper linky things, though. Sorry!

Am looking forward to signs appearing for runner beans, chestnuts, Jerusalem artichokes and Jersey royals.

Is this the greengrocers where you had your bizarre lime/greengage conversation?

And you know that Starfruit are not actually from space?

Pineapples however, are.

Skeadugenga - I reckon they could write a reference book on bean varieties! Magic, jelly etc as well as runner, butter and French (which surely must taste of onions).

Sticks her hand up and has to admit that she's not actually sure what eggplant looks like, but isn't it something Americans go in for a lot?

Although I did know that it's a type of vegetable and has nothing to do with eggs, so hopefully I have redeemed myself slightly!
