Winging It

Just a quick thank you to all the people who organised and attended the 'Winging It' Green Wing convention on Saturday, and in the process raised quite a few thousand pounds for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Great to be able to put names to faces, and see lots of old friends as well. Hello to all the people there who read this blog as well, most of whom I forgot to say goodnight to when I stumbled out of the building, still burning with shame at suddenly remembering I'd said a very rude word indeed when describing Billy's 'swearword reduction' process during the Q&A.

Best bit: charity auction, when the script with my name on it went for slightly more than exactly the same script with Oli Chris's name on it, even if I was reduced to begging people to up the bidding. IT DOESN'T MATTER, I STILL WON.

Yes, well - you're even more of a celebrity than Oli to us...

Hey James, it was great to see you stuck around for so long - that was pretty cool of you. Hope you had fun!

Yes, thank you for coming and not running away due to our crazyness!

I don't think I've ever left a comment on here before...I usually lurk, but I just had to say thanks for coming yesterday and doing the Q & A and everything, everyone has said what a brilliant time they had!

Hey James it was nice to meet you yesterday. Thanks for joining the madness and for staying all day. I hope you has as much fun as we all did. I now have some very odd photo's to go with some very surreal memories, most of them involving verbally abusing Steve Mangan whilst wearing a bin on my head.

Anyway thanks so much for being there, it was really great to see you.

Hello teammate!

We came last, did you hear? Haha!

Hi James
Thanks so much for coming along and staying for so long and really we didn't mind about the swear words. Of course I was 'pimping up' your script big time on the stage but must point out that what James is forgetting to mention is a certain someone's script went for more than his - but we love them all dearly.
Big thanks, hope to see some yo-yo action shots on the blog shortly.

"when the script with my name on it went for slightly more than exactly the same script with Oli Chris's name on it"

Gutted, I thought it was YOURS I’d won not HIS!

A fab day was had by all (despite my newly inflicted Guyball injury).

Thanks for your patience whilst we accosted you with various script books to sign, you’re a gem!

As for the ‘rude word’, you must have temporarily forgotten we are GW fans . . . . not much can shock us.

Thank you for the saying of nice things (jen, I've removed yours purely because bird was freaking out at her real name appearing on internet, but the sentiment was appreciated, don't worry).

It was lovely to meet so many blog commenters, and I'm glad no-one fainted at my profanities.

Sorry Jen - it was lovely to meet you too!

Whoops... Sorry she-who-shall-remain-patroclus! :P How very elusive...

Can I still say this(?): "Sorry, I have absolutely no idea who you are."

Because that was ver' ver' funny.

She who paid too much money for scripts shall remain nameless! But all in a good cause and after being whooped up by a fantastic day. Great to have you and the other GW officials there and to have our hopes and fears addressed in the Q&A.

Thank you for coming along to the convention James (and Patroclus!) It was wonderful to meet you, I'm just sorry that I didn't have longer to chat to you both.

I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed yourselves, and unbelievably relieved that the day was such a success.

Just adding my own thanks to this massive list. At the risk of sounding sycophantic (my parents were completely against The Young Ones on the basis you could never be educated by it, but that was where I learned that word ... so "pah pah pah!") I'd like to reinforce the fact that the Q&A was the high point of many a review, so we're massively grateful to you all for staying, for doing all your signing things, and for answering our questions.

And by the way, I've decided you bear a striking resemblance, profile-wise, to Darren Boyd. Don't argue, I'm not listening.

Worth every penny James, who is this Oli Chris of whom you speak? Lovely to meet Patroclus at last, and thanks to you both for making the effort to come along and for staying, it was much appreciated.

hello James

it was fantastic to meet you and all the GW gang - I'm only sorry I didn't speak to Patroclus herself as I've always loved her posts (although I don't always understand them - too intellectual for me!) As a member of Team Sue, I can now treasure a lovely certificate with your signature.

You were all such good sports , and we so much appreciated that you stayed all day. To think - not a mad axe murderer amongst us! Just GW obsessed loons....

It was such a fabulous day - I'm still on a high. The committee did us proud!

At the risk of sounding like a screaming fangirl (awful word, but fanmiddle-aged-woman is worse) can I say what a pleasure it was to meet you (and Patroclus) on Saturday. I truly came to meet the writers and bloggers whose blogs I admire and I wasn't disappointed. I thought of a question about the writing of the show which I wish I'd asked at the time so, if I may, I'll ask it here:

I heard you mention that one of the things you liked about the "Fast Show" characters was the fact that the writers had an affection for them (at least I think that's what you said!) I presume such affection arises when you write a character that's fleshed-out a bit and has some back-story. So, to get to my actual question, did the Green Wing characters have a back-story at the beginning of series 1? Or was that something which developed over the course of both series?

James Henry said...

Excellent question - I started writing after the pilot had already been made (and a lot of the development work done), but the characters already had a lot of back story before the actors had even been cast. Most of it wasn't relevent to the show, or even had to be changed to fit the ever-wilder plots, but yes, the characters were certainly at least two-and-a-bit dimensional before the scripts were even written, the idea being to try and ground them in some kind of emotional realism before all the silliness took place.

Nice to meet all those people I've been talking to for so long. I got home late last night and had to try to explain what happened to a mystified family. The Q&A was the best bit, like Question time only with more swearing. James can you thank richard for listening to Mr. realdoc on the phone ranting on about xrays being the wrong way up and how he has ruined the image of radiology. He feels much better for having got it off his chest.

James!
Thank you so much for coming and staying so long! We all had a fantastic time. It was great to chat to you all and, of course, to watch you win that dvd *applauds* (I still wouldn't mind colaborating on the museum!)
Thanks so much (again) for coming- you made the day so enjoyable!

Ha! Was that the same profanity that the NFT bleeped the first time? The growl from the audience was most gratifying...
