A song.

Something I always meant to do on my very last day at Waterstone's, was to lock myself in the Comms room, hijack the sound-system/announcer thing and sing 'Desperado'. In full.

Well, that day came, and I'll be honest, I wussed out. So with your kind permission, I'd like to sing that song for you now instead.

*ahem*

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You been out bumbling fences for so long now
Oh, you're hn nmmmblmm
I know that you got your reasons
These things da da da da
Will ahumm dmmm de dumm

Doo be doo the queen of diamonds boy
She'll zum zum zum zum
You know the queen of hearts ta dum de de dummm

Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been la la la la la la la la
But you only something that you can't get

Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no younger
Your pain and your hunger, tum te tum tum
And freedom, oh freedom well, that's just tumpty people talkin'
Your prison is thinging through this thing all alone

Don't your FEET GET COLD (I know that bit) in the winter time?
The sun won't something and the sky, no, wait, sun, won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time from earlier on
You're losin' all your highs and not-highs
Ain't it what now how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your (argh, rhymes with senses), open the gate
Something about raining, but there's a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you
(let sombody love you)
You better let somebody love you
before it's too late

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone, wherever you are.

UPDATE: Unless you're on some kind of hot date, in which case bollocks to you.

Oooh, a Valentine's song! And in return...

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You been out ridin' fences for so long now
Oh, you're a hard one
I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin' you
Can hurt you somehow

Don't you draw the queen of diamonds, boy
She'll beat you if she's able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet

Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can't get

Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home
And freedom, oh freedom well, that's just some people talkin'
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time from the day
You're losin' all your highs and lows
Ain't it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you, before it's too late

How does one ride a fence?

...is the kind of question I usually wish I hadn't asked.

Mmm, I suspect someone fancied writing a song about cowboys, but didn't quite put in the research.

Latigo Flint can probably tell us.

Is this something to do with Brokeback Mountain? Everyone's blog is very confusing at the moment. And I'm getting a cold.

James, I'm married and about to give birth but...

... I think I love you! And in that spirit, here is a song ;-)

I was sleeping and right in the middle of a good dream
Like all at once I wake up from something that keeps knocking at my brain
Before I go insane I hold my pillow to my head
And spring up in my bed screaming out the words I dread
I think I love you

This morning I woke up with this feeling
I didn't know how to deal with and so I just decided to myself
I'd hide it to myself and never talk about it
And did not go and shout it when you walked into the room
I think I love you

I think I love you so what am I so afraid of
I'm afraid that I'm not sure of a love there is no cure for
I think I love you isn't that what life is made of
Though it worries me to say that I never felt this way

I don't know what I'm up against
I don't know what it's all about
I got so much to think about

Hey, I think I love you so what am I so afraid of
I'm afraid that I'm not sure of a love there is no cure for
I think I love you isn't that what life is made of
Though it worries me to say I never felt this way

Believe me you really don't have to worry
I only wanna make you happy and if you say "hey go away" I will
But I think better still I'd better stay around and love you
Do you think I have a case let me ask you to your face
Do you think you love me?

I waited 2 hours tonight for a curry that never showed up until I cancelled the hour.

Thank you.

I meant cancelled 'the order', not the hour, obviously.

Well exactly, otherwise you are the new Doctor Who, and I don't think DT's even really got started yet.

I decided, on reflection, not to sing you a song, lest you took it the wrong way.

I spent Valentine's Day looking at bomb craters the USAF left all over Laos in the early 70's and kept thinking "Pff! how like my own pock-marked and blighted emotional landscape on this bleakest of all days" and then realised what an appalling human being that makes me. It's quite depressing to be on your own on VDay, but it's not, you know, carpet bombing civilians is it.

NP, if it's any help, you were appalling long before that.

I had a boyfriend who wrote a song about me once. He wouldn't let me hear it until it was completed, then dumped me before it was. I think he'd realised the song was rubbish and thought it was the easier way out.

Nice singing though, will now go and get the Eagles onto my ipod toute-suite.

Ah, now I'd argue you're better off with either the Johnny Cash version or, even better, the Langley School Chorus version, which is frankly astonishing.

I had a friend once who was on a second date with this chap. They were in his car, and he suddenly pulled to one side, put on a tape of George Michael's 'Father Figure' and sang along. To the whole thing.

I think she got out of the car, and ran.

have not heard the johnny cash version - must try and find. langley school version is lovely. i still have the best of the eagles cd on my ipod, think i know all the words to all the songs...i blame my parents

Not heard the Johnny Cash version, though when Hurt pings up on shuffle I have to hurry it along before I burst into tears on the bus..

Loving the song! Nice new twist on the lyrics. It even managed dislodge the most current horrific pop tune that's been rotting my brain. Thanks x

Cello's comment prompted me to point out that Willie Nelson is releasing a gay cowboy song, according to the BBC.

... which I did just mention on Patroclus' blog, I'm not obsessed, honestly, (mumble mumble stupid computer, claiming to have lost the comment).

I played cricket against Langley School last year.

The one in Norfolk, not the Canadian one with the choir.

Obviously.

I take it that's the "Hotel California" remix of Desperado. I've definitely heard that one - in fact, I'm sure that's pretty much what I sing while I'm painting. And you should hear my version of "Lyin' Eyes". What a treat.

My boss there was a strange man, in many ways a wrong 'un, but very difficult to actually dislike. He once had to look after Juliian Cope's stash at a book reading. Don't think that was in his job description.

And he was very supportive over the writing thing, which was most appreciated.

And yet, for some reason, all I want to say is, "Shop smart: Shop S-Mart!"

James Henry said...

Always valid.

Well, bollocks to you too. *pout*

Nice song though.

What? Come on, you know you love Army of Darkness.

Great rendition, James! Particularly liked your key change before the last verse and that nice bit of falsetto you did for "(let somebody love you)". Such a finely-honed performance that yours has become the definitive version for me.

Critters and the elements were constantly conspiring to tear holes and gaps in the fences that kept cattle from wandering away. Riding fence meant quite literally riding along the fence, finding and fixing these holes.
