Or maybe he's some sort of... 'Crime Traveller'

Currently working on a one-page outline for a possible crime series. After the first draft, about an ex-cop father turned private detective and his teenage daughter working together to solve crime, I realise I've just outlined 'Veronica Mars'. Which was perfectly good when it existed as 'Veronica Mars'.

In the second draft I make the detective an ex-fireman, and add a slightly gormless male sidekick, then realise I've just written an outline for Boon

Still, the new draft, about a clumsy cyborg cop and his genius niece called Penny looks a bit more OH BOLLOCKS I DONE IT AGAIN.

You should do something with vampires - that's a massively under-exploited genre.

LC: Angels are the new vampires.

Nibus: ooh I like. But could they be IN SPACE!

What if you make the detective an ex-professor of literature who at every crime scene says to his sidekick "I've seen this story before..."

LIKE IT!

And I liked the idea about the cyborg cop and his niece...

What if you made it an ensemble of retired, old-school coppers who are brought in to consult on unsolved cases?

Did you ever read Neil Gaiman short story about the angel detective?

No owls, though.

Yes but even if it was like Boon, it your be James Henry's Boon, not any other Boon, and would therefore be gud and diff'rent.

If you start pulling stuff down into its component parts then there is nothing new about anything.

Also. I want an iPad just so I can make it looks like Penny's copmuter book.

There's two coppers right? And they don't get along at first. One's a bit of a maverick, does things his own day. The other one is more conventional; a family man. And anyway, they're thrown together on a case and well, the consequences are hil-arous.

You can never have too much Veronica Mars in my opinion.

How about a pipe smoking, opium addicted, funny hat wearing genius detective and his slighly dopey sidekick who happens to be a Dr?

I'm totally getting into this whole crowd-sourcing' thing - THIS STUFF IS GOLD!

No one's mentioned where it should be set. What about Sweden!

in the same way everywhere in the world looks a bit like surrey, and every type of meat tastes a bit like chicken, every story is, inevitably, a bit like every other story. i've given up worrying about it. (although, just having completed novel 8, i'm sharply aware there are only 7 basic plots).
just make sure someone, somewhere, at some point unearths a terrifying secret - 'k?

I'm thinking about also having some kind of shadowy nemesis.

What about the detective being a horse and his sidekick a geranium?
